This dazzling high style ornament incorporates classic Art Deco-style opulence with an added dose of Mid-Century flash. During the prosperous post-war era, big, bold gems in every shape, size, and color, and diamonds set in platinum were made into fabulous sparkling pieces to match the high-level optimism. This Vintage Mid-Century Retro Revival Colombian Emerald Diamond Brooch, made in the 20th century, circa 1950s, is a sensational showstopper of exquisite quality. The double pinstem brooch is crafted in 18K white gold and features a pear-shape emerald with an estimated weight of 9.00 carats, at the center of a three sweeping rows of diamonds with an estimated weight of 20.00 carats total. The emerald is accompanied by a report from the America Gemological Laboratories (AGL) stating that it is a natural beryl type green emerald of Colombian origin with minor clarity enhancement.
The large and stately emerald, measuring approximately 19.2 x 13.16 x 7.89 mm, is held with 4 sets of double talon prongs and a single protective prong at the top. The verdant stone unequivocally enriches the design. It overlays two of the three festoons of diamonds and leads the eye upwards towards the swirled flourishes at upper left and right. The movement and sparkle in this composition is dazzling, comprised of so many different cuts of diamonds, like a grand, courtly fountain. The homage to Art Deco style, which was in its heyday thirty years before this piece was made, plays out in the concise geometry of the composition, and particularly in the ribbons of baguette diamonds which shimmer like ripples on water. The diamonds are treated in so many different ways so as to excite and delight for years to come. The festooned top row features calibré-style baguette diamonds, specifically cut to fit very closely together in a channel setting. The middle repeats the channel but replaces it with a textured look of pavé-set round diamonds. The bottom row combines both baguette and round in a tour-de-force display of 8 alternating channels which arc and spill forth, connected on either side by 10 graduated round diamonds like choreographed water droplets which ultimately connect to two large round bezel-set diamonds at the center of the swirls. The composition is formal and elegant, composed in mirror image symmetry.
Emeralds and diamonds are a classic combination. In fact, emerald was always a good “companion” for diamonds in jewelry, since diamonds bring out the special color in the emerald. Colombian emeralds, like this splendid stone, are said to have a warmer and more intense pure green color. When it comes to rich coloration, beauty, and perfection, Colombian emeralds are one of the top choices in the world. Here the emerald and diamonds dance together in this rich and dazzling composition.
Measures approx 2.5" x 2". 9.00ct pear-shaped Colombian emerald, accompanied with AGL certificate. Round brilliant diamond weight approx. 20.00 carats total. Overall weight approx. 25.35 grams, made in 18k white gold. Circa 1950s.
