Description
This Vintage Deco Diamond Articulated Bracelet, made in France in the early 20th century, circa 1930, is a fine example of French Art Moderne, a later phase of Art Deco which developed in the 1930s. The bracelet emphasizes simple geometry, incorporating curving forms, and long horizontal lines, much like the notable architecture of the period. Twenty-seven articulated links crafted in platinum with French assay and workshop marks compose three distinct plaques set with various vintage cuts of diamonds with an estimated weight of 65.00 carats.
The 7.25 inch long (18.42 cm) bracelet carries a symmetrical design, The central plaque of 11 articulated links features a horizontal center line of nine emerald-cut diamonds weighing approximately 30.00 carats, which alternate between rectangular and square. These are bordered by two lines of baguettes grouped in twos and threes to echo the simple rhythm of the center line. The geometric pattern is parenthetically enclosed with curved buckles embellished with smaller round diamonds which overlap the flanking plaques of 8 links.
These supporting plaques continue the bold center line of emerald-cut diamonds but with four round diamonds set in square grids, subdividing the look of the larger stones. The simple math of the bracelet becomes a beautiful three bars of music in 4/4 time. The round diamonds which adorn the curved buckles are repeated in the outer rows of the secondary plaques, this time in a decrescendo that softens these musical bars to a pianissimo.
The vintage diamond cuts provide a rare glimpse of a sparkling moment in time nearly 100 years in the past. The balance of stones includes old European and single-cut diamonds weighing approximately 12.50 carats along with baguette and French-cut diamonds weighing approximately 22.50 carats. The baguettes used so sparingly in the supporting plaques are beautiful disrupters of the pattern that express volume and seem to weave in and out of the glittering grid of diamonds.
Measures approx. 7.25” in length. Diamond weight approx.. 65.00 carats. Overall weight approx. 91.73 grams, platinum with high-polished finish. French assay and workshop marks; circa 1930.
