Description
This demi-parure suite created by Van Cleef & Arpels in the 1970s features a bombé ring and hoop earrings in 18K yellow gold, set with a total of 16.5 carats of pavé-cut diamonds (4.5 carats ring; 12 carats earrings). Big, bold, and gold was a popular in the 1970s and the bombé style (French, meaning ‘bomb-shaped’ and named for the French dessert, bombe glacée or ice cream bomb) offered a pleasingly rounded, attention-grabbing shape with more surface area for embellishment.
Both the ring and earrings boast a mix of Moorish inspiration and high fashion gold glam with fine metal openwork in abstract geometric patterns, reminiscent of the Alhambra itself. Perhaps it was the Palace’s generous curves and geometrical mandorlas that provided such inspiration for this demi-parure, made soon after the iconic Alhambra Collection debuted in 1968. The Alhambra palace and fortress in Granada, Andalusia, Spain is the most famous monument of Islamic architecture mixed with Spanish Renaissance details.
The sparkling bombé cocktail ring also features azuring in the metal, or shaped cutouts behind each stone that are hand-carved and fully customized to create light behind the diamonds. The hours of workmanship, hand carving and stone setting makes this demi-parure quite special.
Signed by Van Cleef & Arpels, Paris. The piece is vintage, circa 1970s. The metal and gemstones are textured 18K yellow gold with azuring in the metal, set with pavé-cut diamonds with an estimated diamond carat weight of 4.5 carats (ring) and 12 carats (earrings) (approx.), D-F color, VVS-VS clarity. The earrings are fitted for pierced ears. The ring size 5.5 (EU 50) and the gross weight: 47.99 g. Signed Van Cleef & Arpels. Origin/Provenance: Van Cleef & Arpels, Paris. Condition is Excellent. Serial number provided upon request.
