A cocktail ring is a definition of bold, lavish, and sparkling, and the tradition of wearing one date back to the Roaring 20s when cocktails were invented yet technically prohibited. This Tiffany & Co. Vintage Citrine Diamond Cocktail Bombé Ring, made in the 20th century, circa 1980s, would have just caught everyone’s eye at a Jazz Age party. It has a colossal look but is still beautifully proportionate to the finger. The ring is crafted in platinum and features an emerald-cut citrine which casts a gorgeous, glistening golden honey-colored glow amidst sparkling white diamonds in a raised domed bombé design. The broad shank of the ring is embellished with pavé-set round brilliant-cut diamonds that continue all the way around the band. Tiffany signs the ring with marks for platinum. The overall weight of the US size 5.5 ring (not sizeable) is an estimated 10.10 grams.
The featured spectacular citrine is rectangular and sets horizontally, measuring 14.43mm x 11.56mm. Yet, the ring's profile dominates height than width, and as such, it is equally comfortable to wear as it is dazzling. The cut-cornered emerald cut has a sleek and mesmerizing geometry of nested rectangles that seem to go on forever. The hall of mirrors effect is created by rectangular facets that graduate from the gemstone’s face like a set of steps. The pleasingly symmetrical emerald cut was developed especially for emeralds by lapidaries around 1500 to create a durable stone with a maximum yield that would show off its exceptional color. The color of this golden citrine is further enhanced by the proliferation of 18K yellow gold prongs—20, in fact—which densely dot the perimeter. Citrine is a yellow variety of quartz that ranges from a light pastel yellow to dark reddish orange. Like this wonderful example, the best quality citrine has a saturated golden hue with fiery orange flashes inside. A saturated yellow to reddish-orange color free of brownish tints is prized in the gemstone.
In the 1980s, many fine jewelry houses, including Tiffany & Co., embraced the popular taste for bold, vibrant jewelry in full volumes. This ring is distinctive for its dimensions in the bombé style, offering a vaulted and attention-grabbing shape with more surface area for embellishment. Looking at the underside of the ring, the voluminous inside is hollowed out to reveal a structure of openwork hexagons. Pavé, from the French word for paved, is a setting method in which the surface of a jewelry item is covered with uniformly sized sparkling stones. Here the diamonds are positioned close together in a honeycomb pattern. The pavé setting has small handmade claws, triangular in form, which hold the stones low and very close so that they produce a carpet of brilliance across the entire surface of a jewelry item. The result is sleek, elegant, and full of sparkle.
Size US 5.5, cannot be resized. Citrine measures 14.43mm x 11.56mm. Overall weight approx. 10.10 grams, made in platinum. Signed Tiffany & Co.; circa 1980s.
