Description

An artful and elegant variation on a classic theme of deep blue sapphire encircled with halos of sparkling diamonds, these Sapphire and Diamond earrings, made by Spectra Fine Jewelry in the 21st century, circa 2010s, have an antique luxury look of jewels made more than 100 years before. The pair of symmetric clip-back earrings are crafted in 18K white gold and feature two oval blue sapphires weighing an estimated 21.28 carats total. The sapphires are accompanied by report nos. CS 62598 A&B dated 6 August 2014 from the America Gemological Laboratories (AGL) stating that they are natural corundum blue sapphires of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) origin with the indication of thermal treatment. The center stones are surrounded by round and baguette diamonds weighing approximately 4.00 carats total, arranged in striking and unusual double halos.

Paying homage to both Art Deco and Edwardian era jewelry, 8 baguette diamonds per earring, perfectly spaced at cardinal and ordinal points around the center stone, are used to create a measured sunburst effect, radiating outward. The baguette-cut diamond was at its height of popularity in the 1920s. In fact, the rectangular shape of this fancy cut stone helped to develop the symmetrical geometric style that is synonymous with the Art Deco movement. The baguette cut is complex and requires a high level of craftsmanship to achieve. When done correctly as in these fine examples, the stone has a hall-of-mirrors effect with nested rectangles much like a step cut or emerald cut.

During the Edwardian era (1901-1915), it was popular for garlands, ribbons, laurel wreaths, bow knots, tassels, and lace to be depicted in jewels, and were rendered with a new lightness, owing to the advances made in platinum fabrication. Here the baguettes stylistically “pin back” double ribbons of diamonds, making them appear cinched in, as if the resulting festoons have a billowing quality. The skillfully realized pattern has a pleasing mathematical precision and harmony and is a testament to Spectra Fine Jewelry’s fine artistry and craftsmanship.

The three most famous regions for blue sapphire are Kashmir, Myanmar (Burma), and Sri Lanka (Ceylon). Ceylon sapphire have nuanced variation in color, density, composition, translucence, and purity, but were originally celebrated for their vibrant medium blue hues, as exemplified in these earrings’ faceted center stones. Because sapphire from this region is typically on the lighter side of the color spectrum, they are generally cut very deep in order to bring out the saturation of color. The opulent ear clips are fitted with French clips and a space for posts, to easily change the option to pierced.

2 oval blue Sri Lankan heat-treated sapphires weighing approx. 21.28 carats total, accompanied with an AGL Certificate. Round and baguette diamonds weighing approximately 4.00 carats total. Overall weight approx. 22.15 grams, made in platinum; circa 2010s.
