The timeless combination of a rich deep blue sapphire encircled with bright white diamonds is a classic made hugely famous by Princess Diana and her choice of engagement ring in 1981, a 12-carat oval Ceylon sapphire held by 14 white gold prongs and surrounded by 14 solitaire diamonds. These Sapphire Diamond Halo Button Earrings are reminiscent of the royal Marguerite ring—actually inspired by a brooch that Prince Albert commissioned Garrard to make in 1840 for Queen Victoria—however, these from Spectra Fine Jewelry have an even more plump and juicy offering of gemstones. The sapphires here are rounder, the diamonds proportionally larger, with 4 talon prongs per stone placed in such a way to emphasize the roundness.

Made in the Contemporary era, circa 2010s, the sumptuous clips back button earrings are crafted in platinum and feature two cushion-cut sapphires with an estimated total weight of 16.47 carats. The sapphires are surrounded by 20 round brilliant-cut diamonds with an estimated total weight of 6.11 carats. The presentation is clean and modern. With so little metal, the lush presentation of gemstones shines forth. The settings from all angles, reveal as much of the stones as possible. From the side, the deep V-shaped prongs which elegantly accent the sides of the diamonds, allow light to shine through. From the back the sapphires are likewise outlined minimally, framing them beautifully and allowing their nuanced colors to be revealed in the light.

The sapphire has, for centuries, been seen as a symbol of the heavens and closely associated with royalty, who in accordance with the Divine Right of Kings, derived their authority directly from God. Sapphires have been prized as great gemstones since 800 BCE. Rulers of Ancient Persia believed the sky was painted blue by the reflection of sapphire stones. The cushion cut with its soft curves gives deeply colored gems such as these a lush and opulent feel. Also known as the pillow cut, the cushion’s softened rectangular shape offers an air of romantic old-world charm à la Queen Victoria, but with a modern classic inflection that remains toujours à la mode.

Each measures approx. 0.75" x 0.75"; clip-on style. Two cushion sapphires weighing a total of 16.47 carats. Sapphires are surrounded by 20 round white diamonds, weighing approx. 6.11 carats. Overall weight approx. 15.61 grams, made in platinum; circa 2010s.
