Description

Master designer M. Gerard was inspired by French women adorning silk scarves around their necks on the streets of Paris in the 1970s when conjuring this artful necklace with a detachable brooch. This rare Diamond Convertible Necklace Brooch was made in France in the 20th century and takes the everyday scarf, or une écharpe, to an entirely different level. Featuring a dazzling display of round brilliant-cut diamonds with an estimated weight of 56 carats, most with H-I color and VS clarity, mounted in 18K yellow gold, the look is a great way to turn an everyday accessory into an haute work of art. The piece is Signed by M. Gérard and numbered with a French assay mark for gold and a maker's mark.

The 15.5-inch necklace features two delicate rows of diamonds that taper toward the beautifully hidden push clasp in the back. Filling the openwork arrangement are 11 half-circle motifs composed of diamonds, at times punctuated by single stones in the center. These motifs alternate positions, creating a dynamic abstract design to further the look of a scarf with a repetitious pattern. The necklace's focal point is asymmetric, just off to the right side as one would tie a knot. It is a sparkling pendant that drapes like delicate fabric, adorned more densely with rows of diamonds that undulate, curve, and occasionally overlap. Diamonds are prong-set. This pendant is fastened to the necklace by hooks and can be detached and worn separately as a double-pin stem brooch. The necklace likewise may be worn separately as a collier, giving the wearer great versatility in this convertible jewel.

While a scarf can enhance an ensemble, this convertible necklace brooch is a standout statement piece that can raise the level of everything you wear with it, from denim to couture. After many years crafting pieces for one of the world’s exquisite French jewelry Maisons, Van Cleef & Arpels, Louis Gérard decided to strike out on his own and founded M. Gérard in 1968. He opened his first boutique at number 8 Avenue Montaigne in Paris, designing extravagant suites of necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, all lavishly embellished with diamonds and colored gems. Much of the jewelry was made by the workshop Atelier Vassort, whom Gérard had been introduced to during his time at Van Cleef & Arpels. André Vassort was one of the most sought-after manufacturers of high-quality French jewelry, creating jewels for the top Maisons, including Van Cleef & Arpels, from 1955 to the early 1990s. This piece is indeed an important part of French Haute Joaillerie history and a rare piece among a limited number of examples by Gérard.

The length of the necklace is approximately 15.5 inches". Brooch measures approx. 3.25" x 1.25". The total weight of the diamonds is approximately 56.00 carats total, estimated, H-I colors, VS clarity. Overall weight approx. 120.00 grams, made in 18k yellow gold. Made in France, accompanied by original box. Signed M. Gérard with serial number, French assay mark for gold, and maker's mark; circa 1970s.
