Before she knew it, Judith Ripka began finding new and innovative ways to wear old jewelry. Her mother, a couturier who worked in Europe before immigrating to the US, was a role model and an inspiration in her own right. This Judith Ripka Pavé Diamond Gold Ball Necklace, made in the 21st century, is styled like a proper strand of pearls, but it is bold, modern, and fabulous—free from all the pearl etiquette that dictates when to wear what appropriate length to which event.
Crafted in 18K yellow gold, this jewel dazzles with 25 diamond pavé-set balls, from back to front, from the smallest measuring 7.87 mm to the largest at 11.81 mm. The surface of each fully round ball is fully covered with pavé diamonds with an estimated total weight of 70 carats. The diamonds are equivalent to F-G color and VS clarity. The necklace measures 17 inches (43.18 cm) in length, weighing 134.12 grams. A second giant necklace with 35 diamond pavé-set balls is available and sold separately at this time.
Like the knot between each pearl that protects the gems from scratching, each sparkling ball is separated by an 18K yellow gold bead textured with gadrooning, or convex curves, to add further dimension to the sparkle. The closure repeats this lovely texture, comprised of 8 gold oval chain links finished with a T bar, embellished with six bezel-set round diamonds at the midpoint and ends. On the other side are eight chain links finished with an open circle adorned with a single bezel-set diamond—a heart-shaped lock charm that dangles near the closure, set with 3 round diamonds. Every inch of this piece is adorned for maximum celebratory sparkle. Even the central repeated motif signals fun and celebration. Ready for a party, disco balls are indeed a magical, lighthearted way to transform light. Unlike actual disco balls, which rely on perfectly cut squares of mirror, the pavé diamonds are set in parallel lines of continuous sparkle, dazzling the room and focusing all eyes on you.
Judith Ripka founded her eponymous jewelry brand in 1977 in New York and has had quite a tony career since then. She has designed jewelry for many well-known public figures, including Oprah Winfrey and Hillary Clinton, when she was the First Lady of the United States. Ripka is a recipient of the prestigious DeBeer's Award for Outstanding Jewelry Design. After she expanded her company to include 16 retail stores, Ripka sold the business in 2014 to Xcel Brands—owners of other iconic New York brands, Halston and Isaac Mizrahi—and they still produce her line today.
Measures approx. 17" in length. Diamond weight approx. 70.00 carats total; estimated F-G color, VS clarity. The largest ball measures 11.81 mm, smallest - 7.87 mm.
