Description

These Hemmerle Aquamarine Pavé Ball Drop Earrings, made circa the 2000s, are an elegant study in blue, featuring a lovely juxtaposition of sparkle against luster with domed against fully round. Founded in 1893 in Munich, Germany, Hemmerle is known for their unique creations characterized by innovative material combinations, all made by hand at their atelier. They create only about 200 one-of-a-kind compositions per year. "Our deliberately slow production rate allows creativity and craftsmanship to flourish." Hemmerle is a fourth-generation family-run jeweler with just one boutique they opened in 1904. They exhibit at international art fairs rather than jewelry fairs, and their creations are part of permanent collections of world-renowned museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the V&A in London. "Each jewel is appreciated as a work of art to be worn and enjoyed in everyday life."

This exact, perfectly symmetrical pair is crafted in 18K white gold and features two domes of sparkling pavé-set round brilliant-cut blue aquamarines as the studs. These suspend three-dimensional boules or orbs, lustrous with agate beads that, have been sewn like lace around the entirety of the surface. Hemmerle is partial to this plump silhouette with no space between the stud and the dangling component, reimagining it in so many unusual materials it is practically a signature style. Where some ball drop earrings from other designers playfully invoke a disco ball, Hemmerle's versions are more about the interplay between the volumes and the surfaces. Like a sculptural formal call and response, they are about balancing forms.

Aquamarine is the mineral beryl, like emerald, which ranges from blue to greenish blue, with the most prized versions being pure blue without inclusions. Like most other gemstones, aquamarine can be fashioned into various finished gems. A step cut is chosen here to show off the saturated aquamarine color. The brilliant round cut is intended to reflect light from the bottom of the stone and send it back to the eye of the viewer. The lace agate below is a banded chalcedony or microcrystalline quartz mineral infused with iron and aluminum. With intricate patterns and beautiful coloring, these gems are eye-catching and unique. Commonly referred to as the "laughter stone" or "happy lace," it is considered a balancing and protecting jewel. In this context, its luster provides a unique and fascinating textural balance.

Measures approx. 1.5" in length; the sphere is approx. 1" in width. Clip-on style with hinged omega backs. Overall weight approx. 26.09 grams, made in 18k white gold. Signed Hemmerle with maker's mark; circa 2000.
