Transformable jewelry is currently a popular trend in the jewelry industry, however by no means a new concept. Multi-use modular pieces that can be broken down into smaller adornments have been widely popular at various times throughout the 20th century. These contemporary earrings give homage to that time and were designed by Hammerman Bros. The American jewelry house was founded in New York in 1946 and has always had a propensity for luxury convertible jewels. Crafted in 18K yellow gold and platinum in the 21st century, circa 2010s, the clip-back earrings are set with 40 oval rubies with an approximate weight of 16 carats and 70 mix-shaped diamonds with an approximate weight of 21 carats of F-G colors and VS clarity. The clever design which detaches in the middle allows the wearer to create three different looks: a sensational drop consisting of both parts, a smaller round button ear clip, and a long oval ear clip. The rubies are not certified but estimated to be of Burmese origin.

The versatility is appealing—both to minimalists looking to pare down their collections to fabulous essentials, and to maximalists, looking to expand their horizons. This pair of multifaceted Hammerman Ruby and Diamond Convertible Drop Earrings is inviting to both types of jewelry collectors. Worn as large or small buttons or as dramatic drops, all three looks are dripping with gorgeous gemstones. The oval faceted rubies are clustered in rosettes in the small button and double rosettes in the larger, set with 18K yellow gold prongs which add warmth to the deep red stones. Each grouping is surrounded by delightfully irregular mixed halos of pear-, round-, and marquise-shaped diamonds set with platinum prongs at diverse angles and planes. Not only do the white diamonds dance with a light show that is truly spectacular, but they also serve to deepen the rich color of the rubies by contrast. Suffice it to say, American modernist poet, William Carlos Williams who composed The Red Wheelbarrow in 1923 would have appreciated the juxtaposition of rubies against diamonds in these beautiful earrings, but also remain relevant to today’s collector and wearer alike.

Measures approx. 2.5" in length each; clip-on style (not for pierced ears but can be converted if necessary). 40 oval Burmese (estimated) rubies weighing approx. 16 carats total. 70 mix-shaped diamonds weighing approx. 21 carats total, F-G colors, VS clarity. Overall weight approx. 46.98 grams, made in Platinum and 18k yellow gold. Signed Hammerman; circa 2010s.
