Description

The bow motif, traditionally seen as a symbol of love and marriage, first appeared in jewelry in the 17th century French royal court of Louis XIV, when gold or silver was delicately shaped into loose double bows covered with gemstones and attached to necklaces or brooches. At the time, a bow-shaped brooch pinned near the heart was a sign of being in love. Ribbons, bows, knots, and tassels were once again popularly depicted in jewels during the Edwardian era (1901-1915), rendered with a lightness and lacelike intricacy. This Signed David Webb Contemporary Diamond Ribbon Brooch, made in the 21st century, 2018, is decidedly bolder and more angular, taking cues both from the Art Deco period and Mid-Century gold jewelry. Crafted in 18K yellow gold and platinum and set with approximately 14.74 carats of brilliant-cut diamonds, the 4 inch long (10.16 cm) double pinstem brooch is quite striking not only for its flowing lines but also for its large size.

Not two but three trailing ribbons loop around and overlap effortlessly and rather playfully, their notched tails and sides edged with a repeating line pattern in textured yellow gold. The lined pattern creates volume in the gold as well as adds to the dynamic movement of the composition. The pavé diamond surface is ideal for conveying fluid movements in diaphanous cloth, all the while creating a splendid lightshow from multiple angles. The French word pavé translates to "paved," and this jewelry technique was named as such because it resembles a paved or cobblestone road. Pavé settings became popular during the Art Deco era to where an opulent jewel-centric look tightly packed with stones was favored. As in this piece, the setting melts away leaving dazzling and billowing carpets of diamonds.

American jeweler, David Webb (1925-1975) left an incredibly rich and diverse archive of jewelry designs, including more than 40,000 original drawings and sketches. Today the company creates designs in the spirit of his vision with skilled artisans retained by his workshop, still located above the original flagship Madison Avenue store. A Certificate of Authenticity accompanies this recent piece which captures Webb’s playful and larger-than-life design sense beautifully.
