Description
These verdant chandelier earrings made in the Contemporary era, circa 2020, sparkle with a delicateness reminiscent of the turn of the last century, with beautifully wrought details borrowing from Edwardian, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco jewelry. Crafted in 18K white gold, the delicate openwork structure mixes all three metaphors quite skillfully, adorned with oval faceted emeralds with an estimated total weight of 29.4 carats and pave diamonds with an estimated total weight of 5.65 carats.
Within the ethereal and white shimmering Edwardian-inspired structure, the concentric ovals are emphasized, dotted with pave diamonds to increase the reflection of light and make the most out of small stones. Short Art Deco-inflected “spokes” connect some of the ovals, and when unadorned, fleetingly refer to Machine Age forms. Organic Art-Nouveau-inflected clusters of emeralds set with 18K white gold prongs connect the rest of the ovals, emphasizing the overall roundness of the design. Emeralds, used extensively both in Art Nouveau and Egyptian revival jewelry of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, represented nature, and their green was a sacred color associated with the fertility of the land.
In studying the geometric forms and sumptuous groupings of materials in these chandelier earrings, one begins to see a beautiful amalgam of the details emerge: an abstracted peacock feather! Peacock feathers never fade or lose their shiny luster. They are impressive to look at and always on display. Peacocks signal good fortune and immortality, and here they reference the opulence and elegance of three glorious time periods all held in suspension within a timeless piece of jewelry.
18k white gold, 46.36 grams; total weight of emeralds 29.40 carats; total weight of diamonds 5.65 carats; 3.9 inches long (10 cm).
