This Contemporary Diamond, Sapphire, and Topaz Articulated Bracelet, made in the 21st century, 2010, pays homage to a streamlined and luxuriant design from the Art Deco period, engineered for its time and immensely popular in the 1920s The bracelet is crafted in 18K white gold and composed of four articulated links or plaques set with varying sizes of rectangular faceted white topaz, and separated by 10 circular-cut sapphires weighing approximately 7.50 carats total, each surrounded by delicate round halos of pave diamonds weighing approximately 2.00 carats total.

White topaz is a translucent and clear stone that is widely used as an alternative to a diamond. It has an impressive hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale, with diamond at the highest rating of 10. The icy white topaz geometric shapes are arranged into a pleasing rhythm reminiscent of a Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) painting. As in his minimalist compositions, the artistic vocabulary employed in the bracelet is reduced to simple geometric elements, with each of four monochromatic identical plaques articulated by two haloed round blue sapphires spacers. This contemporary example calls out the clasp as separate from the repeating rectangular motifs, introducing a beautiful discreet bar decorated by rectangular clear topaz, and excitingly punctuated at each corner with four haloed round blue sapphires. The clasp is so beautiful, it could easily be worn as the focal point.

For jewelry in the Art Deco style, custom geometric cuts like the rectangular clear topaz shapes allude to calibré-cuts popular during the period—typically small rectangles, squares, or oblongs cut to specifically to fit very closely together in a jewelry design. Here, these faceted clear semiprecious gemstones are set with prongs, but pay beautiful tribute to the shimmering opulence, clean lines, and perfect proportions of its Machine Age counterparts.

Measures approx. 7.5” in length. This bracelet is designed as a series of rectangular-cut white topaz of varying sizes, forming geometric openwork plaques, joined by two circular-cut sapphires within circular-cut diamond surrounds. 10 Sapphires weighing approximately 7.50 carats total. Diamond pave weighing approximately 2.00 carats total. Overall weight approx. 87.47 grams, made in 18k white gold; circa 2010s.
