Is there anything quite so delicate and feminine as a brooch depicting a flower? Brooches are a classic accessory worn for centuries; lately, they are making a comeback. Both antique and antique-inspired brooches like this lyrical design are timeless pieces of jewelry to add to your collection. This Contemporary Dahlia Amethyst Diamond Brooch is crafted in 18K yellow gold and features custom-cut amethyst and mother-of-pearl cabochon petals; each outlined delicately in gold. The leaves and stem are set with 44 pavé-set diamonds with raised striations of gold to denote the veins. The double pinstem brooch is punctuated with a luminescent bezel-set cabochon amethyst at the bottom of the design. The pin is deceptively sizeable, measuring 2.5 inches in length by 1.75 inches in width.
Reminiscent of artisanship from the late 19th century, the curvilinear forms which shape the design are exquisite. It is a lovely example of a foliate brooch, traditionally decorated with leaves or floral motifs and worn to signify friendship or love. It is fitting that the central mother-of-pearl petal is stylized as a heart. During the Victorian Era (1837-1901), dahlias were prevalent in many jewelry pieces and signified long-lasting commitment. They were also used widely in wedding celebrations.
The dahlia, with its rounded plumpness and characteristic pointed petals, is beautifully represented by the custom-carved cabochon stones bursting outward from their delicate gold frames. The luster on all the stones, coupled with the translucence of the amethyst, is captivating. On the reverse, the cabochon settings have minimal frames to allow light to pass through the gemstones with beautiful luminescence. Behind the diamonds, there is more azuring in the metal, a technique where shaped cutouts are hand-carved behind each stone to allow light in and make the gemstones sparkle.
Measures approx. 2.5” in length (6.5 cm) by 1.75” in width. Forty-four diamonds are set in the leaf design. Overall weight approx. 55.5 grams, made in 18k yellow gold; circa 2010s.
