One look at this Bulgari Trombino Vintage Yellow Diamond Cocktail Bombé Ring, made in the 20th century, and the original example of this iconic design comes to mind—one that Giorgio Bulgari conceived in 1932, set entirely with diamonds as an engagement ring for his future wife. This stately ring was crafted in platinum and 18K yellow gold, comprising a rectangular emerald-cut yellow diamond with an estimated weight of 20.01 carats. The diamond is accompanied by a report from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) stating it is of Fancy Light yellow color and VS2 clarity. The featured single gemstone is set in a raised domed bombé design, much like the original, embellished by a sparkling expanse of pavé-set round brilliant-cut diamonds across the broad shank and continuing to the band. The yellow diamond is held at the cut corners with 4 wide and sculptural yellow gold prongs, which delightfully enhance the delicate yellow color. It is accented on either side by two striking lines of baguette-cut diamonds leading the eye up to the centerpiece. The ring is Signed Bvlgari and numbered, with Italian marks for gold.

With so much shimmer and sparkle, taking your eyes off this perfectly balanced and stunning example is hard. The Fancy Light yellow diamond adds a quintessentially feminine blush of color in an otherwise bold and geometric piece. The nuanced color combined with the mesmerizing cut is truly enthralling. Yellow diamonds derive color from trace amounts of nitrogen in their crystal structure. The nitrogen molecules absorb blue light, making the stone a yellow shade. This example, with a soft, mellow look, has pleasant associations. Yellow diamonds are said to represent love and commitment. Further, it is said that the open style of the emerald-cut diamond symbolizes an open heart and personal clarity, lovely sentiments for an engagement ring that symbolizes devotion, commitment, and building a life together.

The Trombino, or little trumpet, is one of Bulgari’s most successful and long-lasting designs. This ring's early 1930s Art Deco styling has not changed, with baguette diamonds laddering up the two sides. The baguette diamonds are calibré cut, a common gemstone technique used during the Art Deco. Here, the baguettes are tightly set against one another to create a more industrial feel and an innovative look akin to the details of a vintage automobile. Baguette and emerald-cut diamonds are instantly recognizable for their mesmerizing sleek geometry comprised of step-cut facets. Both cuts were at their height of popularity in the 1920s. The ribbons of light emanating from these stones helped develop the symmetrical geometric style synonymous with the Art Deco movement. Truly a rare find and a stunning piece as an engagement ring or cocktail ring.
