Description
It is indeed mesmerizing to gaze into the center of this square emerald-cut diamond which is the focal point of this Tiffany & Co. Schlumberger Step-Cut Engagement Ring. The large step facets and high crown is simply splendid and produces a brilliance unlike any other shape. The diamond is accompanied by report no. 6147778255 dated June 29, 2012, from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) stating that it has an estimated weight of 3.92 carats of E color and SI1 clarity.
The overall look of the featured diamond is Art Deco-inspired with jazzy geometric forms that radiate outward towards the corners; however, the styling of the ring is not so cut and dry. It is classic, yes, but with a twist evocative of Schlumberger’s design style. The center stone is set in 18K white gold and flanked by softer, more Art Nouveau-like forms. Two feather-like tendrils crossed like Xs—which are a recurring motif in Schlumberger’s pieces that serve to lash disparate elements together—are embellished with pave diamonds and recall the X pattern in the central diamond. Just below the Xs, the bold V-shapes of the split shank 18K yellow gold band draws the eye back to the center of the diamond and adds to the overall rich layering of the design, creating both a flow and a formal tension in the materials and motifs.
Jean Schlumberger (1907-1987) once said that he strived to “make everything look as if it were growing, uneven, at random, organic, in motion”—an apt description of how the elements conflict yet come together in this unusual yet utterly collectible Tiffany engagement ring. A self-taught jeweler, Schlumberger was born to a leading textile manufacturing family in Alsace, France. In the 1930s, he departed for Paris and began creating buttons for Italian fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli, who also commissioned him for costume jewelry. In his early pieces he eschewed the minimalism of Art Deco, opting to capture the vivacity of nature in extravagant compositions. Schlumberger joined Tiffany & Co. in 1956, and soon had his own studio on the mezzanine of their Fifth Avenue store where he created some of the company’s most beguiling designs including this timeless ring.
