Description

“It’s not at all subtle,” Diana Vreeland, Editor-in-Chief of Vogue, once exclaimed about the jewelry of designer Jean Schlumberger. “A Schlumberger lights up a whole room!” The latticework design of this highly active, tactilely pleasing Tiffany & Co. Schlumberger® Diamond Heliodor Bracelet makes it look like it expands and contracts along the diagonal crossed lines. While it may be flexible, the underlying structure is fixed, adorned with at every single intersection with an exciting panoply of motifs including stars and four kinds of flowers centering round heliodors and diamonds, as well as simple gold orbs. The 6.5 inch long by 1.22-inch wide (16.51 x 3.10 cm) bracelet, crafted in 18K yellow gold, dates to the 20th century, circa 1990s and is Signed Tiffany Schlumberger. The original box accompanies the bracelet.

Jean Schlumberger (1907-1987) joined Tiffany & Co. in 1956, and soon had his own studio on the mezzanine of their Fifth Avenue store where he created some of the company’s most recognizable and iconic designs. Schlumberger’s pieces have been coveted and collected by the world’s most fashionable women for decades. From Hollywood film actresses to royal families and international socialites, a Schlumberger creation continues to be an indication of unimpeachable taste. Tiffany & Co. has continued to produce some of the designs created by Schlumberger, and his pieces have maintained their value on the secondary market.

Born to a leading textile manufacturing family in Alsace, France, Schlumberger demonstrates an innate flair for pattern. Crossed Xs are a recurring motif in his pieces that here serve to organize the many different elements. Traveling lengthwise across the bracelet, the 4-pointed stars centering diamonds are the unifier, arranged in two unbroken rows. The other three rows are a wild juxtaposition of elaborations on this form, including eight-petaled flowers with diamond centers, as well as 12 petaled flowers and two other sun-shaped flowers with heliodor centers. Heliodor is a name used by mineralogists and gemologists for specimens of the mineral beryl with a yellow or golden-yellow color. The yellowish colors of heliodor are usually caused by small amounts of iron within the mineral's crystal structure. Heliodor means “gift from the sun,” derived from two Greek words: helios or sun and doron or gift. The use of this stone within a sun shape is a particularly lovely whimsical touch, emblematic of Schlumberger’s clever designs.

Measures approx. 6.5” in length by 1.22” in width. Overall weight approx. 81.83 grams, made in 18k yellow gold. Signed Tiffany & Co. Schlumberger; circa 1990s.
