The Belle Époque (1871-1914) was a time of technological and scientific progress characterized by optimism and economic prosperity in Europe and the United States, spanning the years between the fall of France’s Second Empire of Napoleon III and the beginning of the First World War. In this prosperous climate, the arts flourished. In New York, it was a time of wealth for many, and as incomes rose, people turned to a new French jewelry style of the “Beautiful Era” to display their new status. American luxury jewelry house Tiffany & Co. has been at the forefront of some of the world’s most significant design movements since its founding in 1837. Belle Époque jewelry was created during the first 15 years of the 20th century (1900-1915) and was inspired by motifs of the 18th-century French court of Louis XV and the opulence of Versailles. Today, jewels of this era remain collectible as there is an enthusiastic interest in a limited number of pieces.
This stunning Tiffany & Co. Antique Belle Époque Sapphire Diamond Cocktail Engagement Ring, made in the early 20th century, circa 1910, embodies the beauty and romance of this style. Very few items in life are as precious as an engagement ring, and this rare piece would be a transcendent gesture. The ring is crafted in 18K yellow and white gold, comprising a rectangular emerald-cut blue sapphire with an estimated weight of 7.00 carats. The sapphire is accompanied by certificates from the America Gemological Laboratories (AGL) and Gübelin stating that it is of Burmese (Myanmar) origin with no gemological evidence of thermal treatment. The center stone is surrounded by a rectangular double halo of 76 old-cut diamonds weighing 1.7 carats with G-H color and VS-SI clarity.
Due to their rich, intense royal blue color, Burmese sapphires are among the rarest and most valuable types. The value of this splendid stone is further amplified by the fact that it is unheated. In contrast, most colored gemstones on the market are heat-treated to improve color saturation and clarity. The cut corners of the elegantly shaped sapphire are seamlessly encompassed by the rounded corners of the diamond halo and dotted with delicate button prongs all around. This design detail shows the extraordinary craftsmanship of the Tiffany & Co. artisans who created it. The splendid sparkle of the old-cut diamonds set in white gold continues partway down the yellow gold dazzling split shank band. Twelve bezel-set diamonds comprise the two V-shapes of the split shank with two center stones set in an elongated kite shape mounting that appears to split it before transitioning to the highly polished yellow gold.
The splendid artistry continues on the reverse of the mounting, which is an exceptional detail reserved just for the wearer. It is a triumphal fanfare of fluting and fountain-inspired scrollwork in yellow gold that continues around the base of the sapphire. Here, we can see the luxury of courtly France come into play. The old-cut diamonds have a romantic feel with larger faceting and greater scintillation or flashes of light that appear when the stone is in movement. This gives the stones a fiery sparkle, especially in dim lighting, as they were cut with candlelight in mind. The splendid ring is Signed by Tiffany & Co. and has a documented provenance, which will be provided to interested buyers along with the gemological reports.
Size US 6.25, can be resized but not recommended. Rectangular modified emerald-cut Burmese non-heated sapphire weight approx. 7.00 carats, certified by both AGL and Gübelin labs. 76 diamonds weighing approx. 1.70 carats, estimated G-H colors, VS-SI clarity. Overall weight approx. 10.29 grams, crafted in 18k yellow and 18k white gold. Signed Tiffany & Co.; circa 1910.
