What is more resplendent than a white diamond halo that further intensifies the ruby’s already rich red color? One look at this Ruby and Diamond Cocktail Ring, made by Spectra Fine Jewelry, and the answer is clear—a halo that is tripled and includes multiple cuts of sparkling diamonds. The splendid jewel is crafted in platinum in the 21st century, 2020, and features a cushion-cut ruby weighing an estimated 5.02 carats. The ruby is accompanied by report no. 96007802 dated June 28, 1999, from American Gem Trade Association (AGTA) stating that the natural corundum red ruby is of East Africa origin with indications of thermal treatment. The magnificent stone is held with four 18K yellow gold talon prongs and surrounded by a flush halo setting composed of 16 round brilliant-cut diamonds weighing an estimated total of 1.2 carats, and further surrounded by a double floating halo composed of 28 pear-shape diamonds weighing an estimated total of 7.05 carats. The spectacular sparkle continues partway down the band with pavé diamonds adorning the split shank. The total weight of diamonds is an estimated 8.25 carats.
It is not unusual for rubies to go through heat treatment. Most colored gemstones on the market are heat treated to enhance the color and improve the clarity by removing any inclusions inside, making them less visible. The ruby is one variety of the corundum mineral species, which also includes sapphire. In its purest form, the mineral corundum is colorless. Chromium is the trace element that becomes part of the mineral’s crystal structure which causes the ruby’s red. Corundum is not uncommon, but the gem varieties of ruby and sapphire are relatively rare. Gem corundum deposits are classified as primary and secondary deposits. In East Africa and Madagascar rubies are produced from both primary and secondary deposits. East Africa has been a well-known source for exquisite quality rubies and sapphires since the early 20th century.
Ruby is said to be the most romantic gemstone of all, often given as a gift to show the strength of one's relationship. In fact, French jewelers in the 1800s referred to the ruby as the "dearly loved stone." It was said that the sparkle and fiery red color of the ruby inspired sensuality in the wearer. The cushion cut selected for this stone has a romantic softness with its rounded edges and can enhance the ruby’s red robustness. Surrounded with white diamonds to add fire to the ruby’s red heat, this ring is sure to inspire passion.
