Traditionally, the three stones in a three-stone engagement ring tell the story of a couple's past, present, and future together. The ring's center stone, usually the largest in the trio, symbolizes the couple's present, while the side stones represent their past and future. This three-stone emerald ring made by Spectra Fine Jewelry in the Contemporary Era, circa 2010s, is exquisite as an engagement ring, celebration ring, or cocktail ring. The three green emeralds are each emerald-cut and weigh approximately 6.52 carats total. They are accompanied by a report no. GRS2021-026542 dated 11 February 2021, from Gemresearch Swisslab (GRS) stating that they are natural green beryl type emeralds of Colombian origin with minor clarity enhancement.
Two of the emeralds are described in the GRS report as “vividly saturated” and “reminiscent in hue of the varieties displaying the legendary colors found in the world renowned Muzo mines. They are formally described as ‘Muzo green’ and commonly known in the trade as ‘Old Mine’ emeralds.” The octagonal cut-cornered emeralds are set tightly against one another each with four 18K white gold talon prongs, so that all you see is an uninterrupted spectacular row of emeralds. The band is crafted in 18K white gold.
Evaluating emerald quality, especially clarity, can be very complex. The GIA offers some context for this process, stating in a lab report for a similar stone, “Due to their growth conditions in nature and recovery methods, most emeralds contain surface reaching features. For this reason, clarity enhancement is a common trade practice.” A further note about GRS’ “Muzo green” evaluation: even the most renowned gem testing laboratories cannot determine the origin of a gemstone at the mine level because the gems usually get mixed during the sorting process. Thus, the lab can only analyze the differences in color, clarity, and average size of each gem to provide a rough idea about the mine.
A Muzo emerald is an exclusive variety of emerald sourced from the Muzo emerald mine in Colombia, which is the leading producer of superior quality emerald gemstones the world over. The Muzo mines are counted amongst the oldest sources of emeralds known, coveted by Mughal emperors, Renaissance princes, and Ottoman sultans, and are still one of the richest resources of emerald. Muzo emeralds, prized for their particular quality and color like two of the featured stones in this ring, belong to the beryl mineral family and bear a characteristic silky, rich green hue due to the presence of chromium and vanadium.
