This Pomellato Tubolare Diamond Pavé Fluted Bombé Ring, made in Italy in the Contemporary Era, circa 2000s, is pure sensuous volume. Playfully oversized at eleven-sixteenths of an inch (17 mm) wide, this fluted bombé style gives the look of multiple bands without the fuss. The ring is crafted in 18K white gold and embellished with pavé diamonds weighing approximately 2.50 carats total of F-G color and VS clarity. Upon closer inspection, the ring bands which alternate pavé and unembellished are not perfectly parallel but coiled like a snake. However, the collection is known as Tubolare, so it is less sexy and alluring, more Bauhaus and Centre Pompidou with its enormous tubing. Perhaps. Pomellato often throws unconventional and light-hearted curve balls. In fact, the Tubolare collection is variously jaunty and a little trompe l’oeil with some “stacks of rings” appearing to go in all directions.
Pomellato was established by Pino Rabolini (1936–2018) in 1967 in Milan, “during a period characterized by a highly creative vision and a free and highly avant-garde way of living.” Rabolini, who came from a family of goldsmiths, helped revolutionize the world of fine jewelry by offering women an opportunity to wear colorful gems in their daily lives. He created jewelry with a seasonal prêt-à-porter sensibility. Although Pomellato was acquired in 2013 by the Kering Group, a global luxury group that manages fashion, leather goods, and jewelry for Gucci, Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, Balenciaga, and Alexander McQueen, to name a few, Pomellato’s team of goldsmiths continues to produce striking jewelry from its Milan headquarters to this day.
Current Pomellato creative director, Vincenzo Castaldo, who took the role in 2015, has sought to preserve Pomellato's distinctive style and “give every jewel the organic, slightly irregular human touch that has become the authentic Pomellato signature.” This ring fulfills that wish to be stylish and light-hearted without ever being conventional. As architect Walter Gropius declared in the introduction to the Bauhaus Manifesto, “The end goal of all creative activity is construction.” Pomellato is on a similar wavelength, imbuing each piece with the craftsmanship and the human hand.
