Description

A Harry Winston jewel involves a bit of magic. It can seem as delicate and fleeting as a collection of snowflakes, settling for an instant in a perfect arrangement before being blown by a breeze. But in fact, with every masterful design from this superlative American luxury jewelry house, nothing is left to chance. The designs artfully bring gemstones to life. Each exceptional stone is vividly reimagined, and the result is transformative. American jeweler extraordinaire, Harry Winston (1896-1978), was a connoisseur of stones with an artistic vision. His philosophy—that the diamond should dictate the design, and that their natural brilliance should take the lead—is still espoused by the house today. This noteworthy pair of Harry Winston Jacques Timey Vintage Sapphire Diamond Cluster Stud Earrings, made in the 1980s, sparkle with the iconic and revolutionary Harry Winston cluster motif which is as timeless today as when it was first envisioned over 70 years ago.

The pair of clip-back earrings are crafted in platinum, set with two round faceted blue sapphires weighing an estimated 27.155 carats total. The sapphires are accompanied by a report from the Swiss Gemmological Institute (SSEF) stating that the natural corundum sapphires are “blue of medium strong saturation” of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) origin, with no indication of thermal treatment. Unheated sapphires with such magnificent coloration as these are rare and quite valuable, compared with the majority of colored gemstones on the market that have been heat-treated to improve color saturation and clarity. Ceylon sapphires are some of the finest quality sapphires in the world, distinguished by their excellent brightness, brilliance, and saturation, and treasured by royal families around the world. Iron and titanium are the trace element that causes sapphire’s blue. The more iron the stronger the blue, and the more intense and uniform the blue is, the more valuable the stone. The 13.73 and 13.42 carat (approx.) sapphires are surrounded by 16 pear shapes and 2 marquise diamonds. The gross weight of platinum is an estimated 25.00 grams. The earrings are Signed by Harry Winston with a maker’s mark for Jacques Timey who was a legendary master of Harry Winston Jewelry.

The Winston cluster motif was launched in the 1940s and remains emblematic of the house to the present day. The magic of the cluster motif is derived from setting fancy-shaped diamonds at different angles and within different planes, thereby amplifying the brilliance, scintillation, and fire of the grouping in a dramatic and resplendent light show. Here the pear shapes, all pointing outward, dance around the center stone, angled, sized, and proportioned variously. The rounded shoulders of each diamond are spaced slightly apart from the center sapphires, giving the illusion that they are floating in a celestial orbit. Single marquise diamonds at the bottom of each effortlessly arranged halo add yet another kind of spectacular sparkle with their 56 facets and two pointed ends. Truly an elegant and rare pair from a renowned maker.
