David Webb Cross River Emerald Diamond Cuff Bracelet

American jeweler David Webb (1925-1975) had an affinity for the bold, colorful Art Deco style and a deep understanding of the accompanying jewelry techniques, but how he interpreted the period was with a vivid and exuberant aesthetic that was truly his own. This David Webb Emerald Diamond Cross River Bracelet, made in the 21st century, 2018, features etched and carved cabochon green emeralds with an estimated total weight of 20.62 carats alongside carved rock crystal, blue sapphire beads with an estimated total weight of 3.18 carats, and round brilliant-cut white diamonds with an estimated total weight of 3.44 carats. The bracelet is crafted in a rich combination of materials recognizable in Webb's jewels, including black enamel and textured 18K yellow gold paired with platinum. The cuff bracelet is articulated at two points in front, closed with a hidden push clasp in the back, and measures 2.5 inches (6.35 cm) in diameter. The piece is Signed by David Webb and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.

Studying the details of a David Webb jewel is always exciting, as every piece of jewelry produced today is based on a vibrant and diverse archive he left behind, including more than 40,000 original drawings and sketches. The Cross River collection features Art Deco-inspired statement pieces with hand-painted enamel, rock crystal, and precious gems and is named for the river near his country house. The collection is currently not in production, which makes this fabricated piece a contemporary collectible.

The bracelet's single instance of rock crystal is centered as an octagonal (yet oval on the inner curve) buckle motif. Rock crystal, sometimes called quartz crystal, is pure quartz—a colorless and transparent variety valued for thousands of years. Geologically speaking, pure white rocks are rare. While there are many white minerals, such as quartz, feldspar, and calcite, they don't always assemble themselves into a perfectly white rock such as this. Hardly a streamlined, austere treatment, the carved rock crystal buckle here is accented by paved rows of diamonds set in platinum at East and West and applied pavé diamonds set in platinum trefoils at North and South, bordered in 18K yellow gold and punctuated with sapphire beads. In the center is a showstopper rectangular carved emerald etched with a four-petal flower, as lovely as any Art Deco example, with a bezel set in 18K yellow gold and mounted on a black enamel shield outlined in yellow gold.

The buckle motif is likewise classic Art Deco, yet Webb does not subscribe to the accompanying minimalism of the period. Every custom detail is adorned, embellished, and adorned again. The diamond pavé-set trefoil motif punctuated with a sapphire bead is repeated on the stripe of the gold and enameled cuff, adding more fabulous sparkle, texture, and color near the central focal point. The symmetrical progression around the bracelet includes two raised gold double trefoils embellished with four bezel-set cabochon emeralds, two diamond pavé-set quatrefoils centering on two sapphire beads, and finally, two single bezel-set round diamonds. The clasp is masked with another gold double trefoil, this time unadorned.
