Description
The bib necklace, a timeless jewelry style, has a rich history dating back to Ancient Egypt. The archaeological discoveries inspired its resurgence in the 20th century in Egypt's Valley of the Kings. This exceptional Vassort Vintage Colombian Emerald Diamond Bib Necklace, crafted by renowned French jeweler André Vassort in France during the late 20th century (circa 1980s), showcases a remarkable octagonal emerald, boasting an estimated weight of 13.20 carats. This emerald is accompanied by a report from the Swiss Gemmological Institute (SSEF), dated 11 March 2019, confirming its natural beryl-type origin with medium intense green color saturation, Colombian provenance, and moderate clarity enhancement.
Similar to collar necklaces, bib necklaces grace the collarbone with their short length, typically measuring 12 to 14 inches (30.48 to 35.56 cm) of precious metal. However, a bib necklace distinguishes itself with its wider front and tapered back, adorned with multiple rows of gemstones. This radiant example, crafted in 18K yellow gold, features two rows of round brilliant-cut diamonds that gracefully taper around the neck. These rows are elegantly separated by 22 graduated marquise-cut diamonds, vertically oriented and meticulously prong-set, including one discreetly placed on the hidden push clasp. Sixteen sparkling round diamonds encircle the octagonal step-cut emerald at the necklace's centerpiece, creating a captivating halo. Within this halo, four larger round diamonds adorn the cardinal points, contributing to a subtle yet dynamic ensemble.
Colombian emeralds, celebrated for their warmer and intensely pure green hues, hold a unique historical and mythical allure akin to Burmese rubies and Kashmiri sapphires. As is the case with the featured stone, these emeralds are often subjected to clarity enhancements to address surface-reaching features arising from their natural growth conditions and recovery methods.
André Vassort, a sought-after jewelry manufacturer from 1955 to the early 1990s, created exquisite pieces for top Maisons like Van Cleef & Arpels, Boucheron, and Mauboussin. He was known for his expertise in working with yellow gold, bringing out its inherent warmth and an array of gemstones. While many of his creations remain unmarked and undocumented, this piece proudly bears his signature alongside that of one of his renowned clients. André Vassort's mark is synonymous with exceptional craftsmanship and fine jewelry. A matching bracelet, available separately at the time of this writing, complements this magnificent necklace.
The centerpiece Colombian octagonal emerald, with mild clarity enhancement, weighs approximately 13.20 carats and is accompanied by an SSEF Certificate. The necklace boasts a total diamond weight of around 7.65 carats, and its overall weight is approximately 64.81 grams. Crafted in 18k yellow gold, it is signed by Vassort and made in France, originating from the 1980s.
