Extraordinary color, composition, and quality are fused in an exceptional combination of sparkling gemstones that are the focal point in this Van Cleef & Arpels Vintage Yellow Sapphire Navette Cocktail Ring. Crafted circa 1970s, we can see how this jewel borrows a dramatic juxtaposition of colors from the Maison’s ubiquitous use of flowers. Discovering this striking ring is comparable to happening upon an iris or a pansy where deep inky purple, bright yellow, and white come together to transfix our attention and dazzle us with one perfect bloom. The ring is crafted in 18K yellow gold and features an oval faceted yellow sapphire with an estimated weight of 6.20 carats. The sapphire is accompanied by a report from Gemresearch Swisslab (GRS) stating that the natural corundum sapphire is fancy vivid yellow of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) origin, with no indication of thermal treatment.

Yellow sapphires are some of the most sought-after colors in the gemstone and frequently have a more flawless appearance with fewer inclusions than other colors of the same gem. These splendid sunny formations are found in Tanzania, Madagascar, Thailand, Australia, and Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon). Ceylon sapphires are arguably the finest quality, known for their excellent clarity and color consistency. Heat treatments have vastly increased the supply of yellow sapphires on the market today. However, this particular center stone is of natural color, which makes the strong saturation on this stone quite rare and valuable. The most common cause of the yellow coloration is the trace element iron, but the stones can also be colored naturally by low-level radiation within the earth.

The center oval faceted yellow sapphire is held with a multitude of yellow gold prongs within a pointed oval or navette double halo setting. Immediately surrounding the stone are 12 round-faceted deep purple amethysts, each strikingly set with contrasting prongs. Purple and yellow are complementary colors—existing as opposites on the color wheel. The deep purple causes the yellow to pop, enhancing the center stone’s vibrancy.

Surrounding the amethyst stones are 20 round brilliant-cut diamonds equivalent to E-F colors and VS-VVS clarity. Emblematic of the exquisite workmanship and attention to detail of the Maison, the diamonds are highlighted in a unique mounting to stand apart from the rest of the stones yet tie the composition together. The diamonds are held with minimal metal on the inside of the halo and accented on the outer edge with a continuous scalloped bezel, a signature look, and technique for Maison’s halo designs from this period.
From the top view, the stunning composition resembles something architectonic and crafted like an escutcheon and keyhole. From the side view, the arrangement of stones is even more dynamic and exciting, with stones set on three tiers. The fabulous cocktail ring is a rare vintage find and a tour-de-force of Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry-making savoir-faire.
