Van Cleef & Arpels Rose de Noël™ Vintage White Coral Diamond Button Earrings

When a Van Cleef & Arpels jewel so sensitively depicts a flower, the piece seems to bloom before our eyes and gracefully to come to life. We are entranced by its delicate beauty and enthralled with the poetry of its petals. Flowers have long been a signature of the Maison since their establishment at Place Vendôme in Paris in 1906, where every meticulous detail reveals a tender emotion, or an ephemeral moment expressed at the heart of each piece. The Rose de Noël™ collection is significant within the Maison’s oeuvre, introduced in the 1970s and produced to this day. This pair of Van Cleef & Arpels Vintage Rose de Noël™ White Coral Button Earrings is an especially expressive example, made in France in the late 20th century, circa 1990s. Crafted in 18K yellow gold, the earrings are set with 12 hand carved white coral petals accented with floral centers composed of bursts of gold threads and 12 white diamonds with an estimated weight of 1.20 carats total of D-F color and IF-VVS clarity. The earrings are Signed Van Cleef & Arpels and stamped with a serial number which will be provided to interested buyers.

The Rose de Noël™ collection is devoted to beauty and romance, featuring Christmas roses which bloom in midwinter like promises of happiness. In pieces produced nowadays, the white petals are created in mother-of-pearl, but this example features rare white coral. Collectors should take note that coral has become an endangered species material since this piece was made, thus enhancing the value of coral Rose de Noël™ earrings extant. Here the white coral is magnificently shaped and polished into voluptuous, sensual petals which sparkle with a natural luster that has been brought forth to perfection. Each petal is notched at the outer edge, as is the signature silhouette of the Rose de Noël™, and a careful study of the arrangement of petals will reveal the subtle mirror image symmetry of the pair. The bottom three petals are overlapped in a fanned progression which draws the eye towards the wearer’s face. The three remaining petals follow a different pattern, with the top petal featured and the flanking two underlapped, adding dimension, naturalism, and an achingly beautiful subtlety to the design.

Beyond the petal shape, a second instantly recognizable characteristic of these Rose de Noël™ earrings is the stamen or floral center, which is crafted with individual gold threads accented with diamonds. The design of the center of the flower is derived from the Maison’s Clematis Brooch introduced in the 1960s, and is almost reminiscent of a spectacular starburst, capturing the effervescence of the Mid Century in the age of space exploration. In this example, a constellation of six round brilliant-cut diamonds, which include colorless and Internally Flawless examples per earring, add further transcendent dazzle and delicate sparkle.
