Description
In 1954, Van Cleef & Arpels launched its La Boutique collection of more affordable jewelry at 22 Place Vendôme. The idea was to provide more light-hearted and whimsical jewels, usually of naturalistic form, using gold and semi-precious stones with diamonds highlights. This polar bear from the 1970s is depicted in a playful curious profile with head outstretched. A single ruby, bright and lively, has been placed so sweetly for the eye, while curved platinum accents describe the rest of his intentions and personality. This endearing animal captures the original spirit of the Paris-based La Boutique collection, although it is signed Van Cleef & Arpels NY.
The single pinstem brooch mounted in platinum with French Assay marks is set with 155 circular-cut white diamonds totaling approximately 3.00-3.50 carats of F-G color and VVS-VS clarity. The especially white diamonds selected to depict his coat is another enchanting element of this benevolent creature, so he can have no trouble blending in with his icy habitat. In fact, the manner in which the diamonds are artfully custom set with so many platinum prongs adds further interplay of depth, texture, and density to his coat. We can see the exquisite workmanship of the stone setter at work in the back of the brooch as well, where platinum has been wrought in an irregular hexagonal lattice to let in light behind the stones.

The metal and gemstones are platinum, diamonds, ruby with a diamond carat weight of 3-3.50 carats (approx.), F-G color, VVS-VS clarity. Single pinstem with overall dimensions of 1.75 in. height (44.45 mm) and gross weight of 15.76 g. Signed Van Cleef & Arpels, New York (original maker’s mark slightly obscured), French Assay marks.
