Sparkling and effervescent like bubbly champagne, these Van Cleef & Arpels “Petillante” Draperie Diamond Drop Earrings from Maison’s iconic diamond collection will have you ready for your fabulous Red Carpet moment, following the footsteps of Kylie Minogue, Kate Blanchette, and Michelle Yeoh, who has already lead the way adorning this graceful design. As the name suggests, the diamonds and metal take on fluidity, with ephemeral “bubbles” of scintillation appearing to float in the atmosphere.

Made in France circa 2005-2006, the earrings are crafted in an 18K white gold set with sparkling diamonds of three distinct shapes and cuts in various sizes: round brilliant, pear shape, and marquise. The graceful drop earrings are composed of mirror image symmetry in a design with four-festooned rows set with varying stones, along with three articulated vertical drops that create scintillating movement. An inner and outer hoop set with round brilliant-cut diamonds close together is angled perfectly to frame the face in a radiant glow. The double hoop starts at the front of the earlobe, swoops around, and crosses under the earlobe in the back. The outer hoop splits into three articulated tiers of diamonds, which are more sparsely set, and further spills over into three staggered drops. The 94-round diamonds are exquisitely held with 3 prongs to look like pear shapes, whereas the 6 pears and 6 marquise diamonds are distinguished by their corner prongs. Although we tried to wrap our heads around the engineering of the design in this way, what makes these earrings (literally) shine is the effect of random scintillation in a floating design that hovers the neckline most playfully. The diamond bubbles or “petillantes” come alive with movement as it is adorned.

While the round brilliant is the most optimized cut on the market with 58 facets, renowned for its unrivalled fire and brilliance, the ultimate triumvirate—round, pear, and marquise—delivers peak performance and sensational sparkle as an ensemble. The pear shape combines the round brilliant and marquise silhouette to form a tapered teardrop with an extraordinary light display. Pear shape diamonds have a larger surface area, so they tend to refract more light than other shapes, giving them a distinctive dazzling sparkle. Marquise diamonds, with their long almond shape, plump center, and pointed ends, likewise have 58 facets and can create the illusion of greater size, maximizing light performance beautifully.
