Description
This Tiffany & Co. Schlumberger® Turquoise Coral Bangle Bracelet, made in France in the 20th century? It is a significant, iconic, and rare piece within the French designer's oeuvre during the long collaboration with the American luxury jewelry house. The bracelet is designed in vitreous black enamel and 18k yellow gold with articulated gold hoops and interior segments, adorned on the bias with dotted cabochon turquoise and coral studs. The piece is Signed by Tiffany & Co. Schlumberger 750 France. The gross weight of gold is an estimated 143.73 grams. This stunning wide model measures 3/4-inch (1.9 cm) in width. The closure is hinged with a snap tongue and push-tube pin safety closure, as is typical on all variations within this model.
The segmented gold and enamel bangle style was first introduced in 1962 and offered in multiple vitreous and paillonné enamel colors. While the similar Tiffany & Co. Schlumberger® Croisillon Bracelet featuring his signature crosspiece motif is still currently produced and presented, this bezel-set cabochon version is not, thus increasing the value of a finite number of pieces extant. The top of the bracelet is decorated with repeating diagonal lines of 5 turquoise cabochons perfectly centered within each segment alternating with four coral cabochons that straddle the gold bars. Jean Schlumberger said, "I observe nature and find verve." The silhouette, colorful surface adornment, and flexible segmented inner curve resemble a fantastical creature curled in a protective pose around your wrist.
Jean Schlumberger's iconic enamel jewels for Tiffany & Co. are magnificent pieces of design history and masterpieces of color vitreous surfaces. Vitreous or porcelain enamel is a type of glass formulated to adhere to the surface of metals by firing at high temperatures. For these pieces, Schlumberger revived a 19th-century enamel art form, a complex, labor-intensive process of meticulously layering and firing enamel multiple times. Few craftspeople in the world have the artistry and skill to execute these time-honored techniques. Achieve an enamel finish of flawlessly even grain and color requires consummate mastery of extremely high firing temperatures. The mirror-like black surface provides depth and dazzling high contrast for the bezel-set polished stones.
Jean Schlumberger (1907-1987) joined Tiffany & Co. in 1956. He soon had his studio on the mezzanine of their Fifth Avenue store, where he created some of the company's most recognizable and iconic designs. Schlumberger's pieces have been coveted and collected by the world's most fashionable women for decades. From Hollywood film actresses to royal families and international socialites, a Schlumberger creation continues to be an indication of unimpeachable taste. Tiffany & Co. has continued to produce some of the designs created by Schlumberger, and his pieces have maintained their value on the secondary market. Collectors should note that coral has become an endangered species material since this piece was made, thus enhancing the value of bangles extant. Please note: this property cannot be shipped internationally due to endangered species materials (coral).
Measures approx. 7.5" in length. Overall weight approx. 143.73 grams, made in 18k yellow gold. Signed Tiffany & Co. Schlumberger; circa 1970s.
