Description

The superior cut and quality of a Tiffany & Co. diamond has distinguished this luxury jewelry company from its counterparts since its founding in New York in 1838. Produced nearly 100 years later, this Tiffany & Co. Vintage Art Deco Diamond Link Bracelet, made in the 1930s, is no exception. Masterfully hand crafted in platinum, this splendid work of art features round and baguette diamonds weighing an estimated 14.60 carats of near colorless G-I color and VS-SI clarity. The piece measures 7 inches (17.78 cm) in length and includes a spare link for extension. It is Signed Tiffany & Co. on the reverse of the principal plaque opposite the clasp. The weight of the bracelet is 46.65 grams.

Articulated bracelets were sophisticated, glamorous, and dripping with diamonds arranged in abstract geometric compositions and symmetrical patterns. They were emblematic of the Art Deco period and the Machine Age, engineered for their time and immensely popular. Women of the 1920s and 1930s were not shy about covering themselves with sparkling bold jewelry, and it was not uncommon to wear multiple bracelets on both wrists. This articulated bracelet is comprised of ten plaques or sections which alternate equally between small and large buckle motifs, five of each, all joined together with ten articulated center row links to give the bracelet flexibility. The center links are paved with two rows of diamonds and shaped like half circles to add dimension and amplify the sparkle. The push clasp is elegantly concealed within one of the larger plaques so as not to break the flow of repeated motifs around the wrist.

The larger buckle motif features a larger round diamond in the center, raised and flanked on top and bottom by horizontal single baguettes. This center column of five diamonds is bordered symmetrically by two columns of six round diamonds each which appear to wrap around an oblong buckle. The smaller buckle, like the larger, is paved with alternating sizes of round diamonds, again to skillfully add dimension to the sparkle. The square buckle is simplified from the larger, adorned on top and bottom with single perpendicular baguettes which overlap the edges with mathematical elegance.

The buckle motif is classic Art Deco—sophisticated, geometric, and a little masculine. The flapper look was aggressively angular and streamlined, rejecting feminine frills and motifs that came before it. The aesthetic borrowed from the aesthetics of high modernism, rejecting ornamentation in favor of purity of form. The bracelet is a sleek and timeless sparkling treasure that is a gorgeous piece of history and an excellent example of American Art Deco, up to Tiffany & Co. standards in every aspect.
