The term “Tutti Frutti” was arguably coined in the 1970s for an opulent style created in Paris in the 1920s by Cartier, which inspired a fruitful cornucopia of brooches, necklaces, bracelets and rings with certain gemstone combinations. The design sensibility of the Art Deco period was not only guided by sleek lines and geometric patterns, but also high-contrast colors of emeralds, rubies, sapphires, and diamonds. In many cases, these gems featured carved lapidary work influenced by the aesthetics and traditional art forms of faraway lands, such as design motifs of South Asia. The Mughal technique of carving precious gems with arrangements focused on making an impact through the mix of colors—a blaze of blue, green, and red like an painting flooded with the wonderful Indian sunlight as it sets into dusk.

This vibrant Diamond Tutti Frutti Articulated Bracelet made by Spectra Fine Jewelry in the 21st century, is contemporary one-of-a-kind update of the iconic Mughal-inspired style. The 7-inch long by 0.8-inch wide bracelet is crafted in 18K white gold and features a magnificent hexagonal shape carved emerald at the clasp. The emerald weighs an estimated 13.64 carats and is etched with a 6-petal flower. The bracelet uses the original Tutti Frutti concept—unique for its sheer number of stones and ingeniously flexible design—as a beautiful point of departure. Three rows of colorful gemstones include cabochon sapphires weighing an estimated 38.46 carats total, cabochon emeralds weighing an estimated 30.17 carats total, and cabochon pink rubies weighing an estimated 50.55 carats total. As was the style, the rows do not adhere to the sleek, clean lines of Art Deco, but are disrupted with mixed cut diamonds weighing an estimated 2.75 carats total placed in a random pattern.

Each oval cabochon sapphire is wonderfully carved into an etched flower design and held with 4 prominent white gold prongs. Four of the largest rubies are held the same way, however the smaller rubies and emeralds are innovatively pierced in the center and set with bezel-set gems of the opposite stone, e.g., all rubies are punctuated with bezel-set emeralds at the center, and all emeralds with rubies. The composition is lyrically balanced with single round white diamonds set in round white gold bezels picking up this dotted repetition and are scattered throughout the design. Breaking the pattern to create a more naturalized look, mixed cut diamonds are grouped in various lyrical shapes and bezel-set to suggest leaves. The fancifully carved gemstones add incredibly depth and luster to this sumptuous and collectable piece.
