Spectra Fine Jewelry Diamond Mixed Cut Riviere Collar Necklace

This beautiful Diamond Necklace from Spectra Fine Jewelry, made in the 21st century, 2019, features 189 baguette and round diamonds set invisibly halfway, and weighing an estimated 4.52 carats total. The diamonds are equivalent to G-H colors and VS clarity. The unique piece is inspired by a classic riviere necklace, a form first introduced in the 1700s, which features all the same size or progressively larger jewels of the same type and shape, set in separate collets or bezels. Here 21 graduated rectangular diamond configurations are mounted in bold rectilinear bezel settings crafted in 18K white gold.

At first glance, the diamonds appear to be individual cut-cornered rectangular emerald cuts oriented lengthwise. The stones glimmer with that characteristic mesmerizing geometry and hall-of-mirrors effect, in contrast with the extra wide octagonal white gold borders which frame them. Upon closer inspection, the diamonds become greater than the sum of their parts, so to speak. In fact the emerald cuts are comprised of multiple baguette diamonds, specifically three set horizontally in parallel rows down the middle and two at perpendiculars, punctuated by perfectly fitting round diamonds at the four corners. This clever configuration effectively creates 21 trompe l’oeil emerald-cut diamonds. When you consider that each concise and custom-cut grouping of 9 diamonds also graduates in size, the skill level required to set all these stones and create such a cohesive illusion is to be admired.

Subtle and sleek, the illusion setting dazzles with a unique kind of sparkle. Imitating a single rectangular emerald-cut diamond with 58 long and linear step-cut facets, here multiple baguette diamonds, step cut with 14 linear facets are subbed in rather convincingly. To replicate the effervescent sparkle at the cut corners, four round diamonds are likewise subbed in. Such expert-level stone setting references techniques from the Art Deco period in which Spectra Fine Jewelry is also more than well-versed.
