Description

Bold proportions are always fun in a cocktail ring where the jewelry designer has a lot of room to make a big statement. The bigger the better. This Signed Rinaldo Gavello Contemporary Citrine Cocktail Ring, made in Italy in the 21st century, circa 2015, is in the guise of a signet ring, a distinctive piece of jewelry dating back to the days of the Old Testament which typically bore a family crest or another symbol representing an individual on its distinguishable flat bezel. Through playful changes in scale, we see this silhouette in an entirely different light.
The ring is crafted in 18K yellow gold and features a rectangular citrine weighing a total of approximately 40 carats. The cut of the golden stone is geometric and mesmerizing, with radiating facets emanating from the center. The citrine gemstone, known for its bright and sunny energy, is the transparent, pale yellow to brownish orange variety of quartz. A trace of iron in citrine’s structure is responsible for its yellow-to-orange color. The gemstone is the symbol of joy and abundance, a significance which is amplified by the design decisions of Gavello who created his jewelry brand beginning in the late 1970s in Milan, Italy. His silhouettes and surface treatments tend toward the avant garde and ultra luxe. The ring shape is out of the ordinary, with the back pinched into a slightly pointed shape, and sporting two decorative or functional round perforations large enough for the boldest of gold chains to slide through.

The ring plays with scale, and in a sense monumentalizes both the signet and the cocktail ring, both signifiers of influence and high social status, both signifiers of an individual. Extravagant and bold cocktail rings were popularly worn at fancy anti-Prohibition parties in the 1920s as a way to flaunt illicit behavior, and became a symbol of wealth, status, and social independence. Like a signet ring was a powerful tool akin to a signature, the cocktail ring at the time was a form of identity for the woman to the bartender so he could match at-a-glance the drink to the cocktail ring wearer. This ring, imbued with a clever significance, also has a wow factor so impactful, it is sure to be a conversation starter every time you wear it.

Size US 7, can be resized although to a limit. Center rectangular citrine weighing a total of approximately 40.00 carats total. Overall weight approx. 34.1 grams, made in 18k yellow gold. Signed Rinaldo Gavello, circa 2015.
