You have to love a jewelry designer who makes such an iconoclastic statement, “Women are tired of jewelry-looking jewelry,” as he breaks the form over and over and plays with the concept of classics throughout history. Suffice it to say, when you get a gemstone ring from American jewelry designer, David Webb (1925-1975), you get a bold one. This very rare vintage Signed David Webb Ceylon Sapphire Diamond Cocktail Ring, made in the late 20th century, features a sizeable sapphire with an estimated weight of 17.65 carats, presented with equal importance in the composition to the sculptural 18K yellow gold. The sapphire is accompanied by report no. CS 1072742 dated 7 January 2016 from the America Gemological Laboratories (AGL) stating that it is a natural corundum blue sapphire of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) origin with no indication of thermal treatment.

Natural unheated sapphires command a premium due to their rarity, as most colored stones on the market have been heat-treated to improve clarity and color saturation. The sapphire in this ring is a medium-deep blue with a slight violet coloration and very slightly included, with some evidence of color zoning throughout the stone only visible under magnification. The bezel-set stone is flanked by two triangle-shaped diamonds set with prongs with an estimated weight of 3.00 carats total. With its exaggeratedly wide band and statement-making qualities, the ring is tapered from front to back like a cigar band style. However, the exaggerated flanges and tapering silhouette are more reminiscent of Medieval plate armor than Art Deco chic. Quite bold indeed.
Webb was known as the Houdini of gold and made it a point to study gold objects across cultures throughout the ages on weekly trips he took to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Nearly every ancient culture around the world inspired David Webb. He was also inspired by fortifications and fortresses and other architecturally bold structures. As he once said, "I had a tremendous feeling of art in me. I wanted to be an archaeologist, a ceramicist, or a jeweler. Jewelry won out." This ring captures the David Webb creative spirit where he was inspired by so many non-jewelry ideas throughout history and turned them into daring and unmistakable non-jewelry-looking jewelry quite masterfully.

Size US 5, should not be resized other than a removable insert. Sri-Lankan (Ceylon) origin oval-shaped natural sapphire with no heat, approx. 17.65 carats total, accompanied with AGL. The very rare sapphire is a medium-deep slightly violet blue and very slightly included, with some evidence of color zoning throughout the stone only visible under magnification. Flanked by two triangle-shaped diamonds weighing approximately 3.00 carats total. Made in 18k yellow gold. Signed D. Webb, late 20th Century.
