Description
What is so grand as a collar necklace comprised of a continuous flow of sparkling diamonds? This opulent Contemporary Diamond Scroll Bombé Collar Necklace , made in the 21st century, circa 2000s, sparkles with courtly splendor, as if perfectly at home in the French court of Marie Antoinette. Every stripe of this piece is glorious, each in its own right and amplified in contrast to the whole. Crafted in platinum, the collar necklace features wide diagonal striped bands of round brilliant-cut diamonds alternating with narrow bands of baguette diamonds with an estimated weight of 60 carats total of as F-G-H colors and VVS-VS clarity. The piece is comprised of one repeated sculptural motif realized in two variations which flow around the neckline like waves in the ocean, swelling and breaking in a seemingly endless flow. To complete the magnificent presentation, a matching bracelet is available and sold separately at the time of this writing. The look conjures so many styles – rooted French Baroque, modernized by Art Deco, as we saw of Retro styles of the 1940s that gave homage to both Eras. This necklace is clearly a revival as it was crafted in the Contemporary Era, circa 2000s.
The scroll motif—curved and pointed like a tilde in a Spanish eñe—is a popular motif in jewelry throughout history, particularly during the Art Deco period where baguette diamonds are arranged in ribbons, like those in this necklace, custom cut to fit very closely together within the platinum borders. The scroll or modified wave pattern is accented by the clean lines and modern, geometric look of the baguette diamond, which was at its height of popularity in the 1920s. In fact, the rectangular shape of this fancy cut stone helped to develop the symmetrical geometric style that is synonymous with the Art Deco movement. The baguette diamonds are oriented lengthwise, recalling the sleek and uninterrupted flow of calibré gemstones popularly used in geometric jewelry designs of the period. These narrow accents bring a crisp look and drive the dynamic movement of this diamond-centric composition.
The interplay of the two variations, one edged in platinum with borders clearly defined, and the other free with the overall shape loosely imitating the former, are radiant each in their own way, creating a spectacular lightshow of varied sparkle. The luxurious volumetric flourishes are in the bombé style (French, meaning ‘bomb-shaped’ and named for the French dessert, bombe glacée or ice cream bomb), offering a pleasingly rounded, attention-grabbing shape with more surface area for embellishment. Because the bands of diamonds are oriented diagonally rather than perpendicularly, there can be a richer expanse of stones, which is particularly evident in the sparkling double rows of round brilliant-cut diamonds set with prongs to maximize the sparkle. The diamonds flow endlessly around the neckline unbroken by even the push clasp which is hidden. The artistry, sparkle, and craftsmanship of this collar necklace are quite superior, making the piece a stunner to wear.
Diamond weight approx. 60.00 carats total, F-G-H colors, VVS-VS clarity. Overall weight approx. 143.06 grams, made in platinum. Circa 2000s.
