Description
The alluringly smooth cabochon employs a gem-cutting technique dating back to the Middle Ages when stones were hand-carved into curved, dome-like shapes before smoothing and polishing. The result is a sensual, lustrous surface with a bold look that can be classic or otherworldly. A cabochon cut on a sapphire exhibits the very distinctive raw beauty of the particular crystal.
This Contemporary Burmese Sapphire Cabochon Engagement Ring, crafted in 2018, features an oval double cabochon blue sapphire—domed on top and to a lesser extent on the bottom too—with an estimated weight of 40.59 carats, set simply with four talon prongs. The sapphire is accompanied by report no. CS 54180, dated 7 November 2013 from American Gemological Laboratories (AGL), states that the natural corundum blue sapphire is of Burmese (Myanmar) origin with no evidence of heat.
The center stone takes center stage. From the top view, the highly domed deep blue stone dominates, with diamond accents largely adorning the verticals of the ring. In sharp contrast to the cabochon’s organic form, unusual trapezoid- and shield-cut diamonds of approximately 1.50 carats, G color, and VS-SI clarity are set within nested inverted triangles, two on each side, to electrify the ring shoulders with a dynamic geometry visually.
Sapphire is an excellent engagement ring, with the sacred royal stone signifying honesty, sincerity, and faithfulness. It is also believed to provide good fortune within marriage and to keep it strong and healthy. It wears well when scoring a nine on the Mohs hardness scale next to the diamond at 10. With its bold silhouette and forthright, striking details, this sizeable stunner transcends the classic form. Due to their rich, intense royal blue color, Burmese sapphires are among the rarest and most valuable types. The value of this splendid stone is further amplified by the fact that it is unheated. In contrast, most colored gemstones are heat-treated to improve color saturation and clarity.
Color purists and connoisseurs of gemstones will love this delicate cabochon ring for the specimen alone. These stones do not give flashes and dances of light reflection and often have no sparkle like a faceted cut. Arguably, a cabochon is for the pure enjoyment of color and succulent tactility, and its history is linked to pre-15th Century gemstones - which were often carved in this manner and before the brilliantly faceted gemstones of today were evidenced. This particular cabochon also is one of the finest examples of even color distribution of an unheated, untreated saturated blue of this nature. It is a magnificent gem that stands alone as a revered piece of earth’s bountiful treasures - and one that will most likely never be gifted in the same way again. I’m combining with this custom one-of-a-kind setting; the piece is a magnificent work of art for jewelry collectors and gem enthusiasts alike.
Adjustable Size US 4.5 to 6. Burmese cabochon sapphire weight approx. 40.59 carats, certified by AGL with no indication of heat. Diamond weight approx. 1.50 carats; G color, VS-SI clarity. Overall weight approx. 14.1 grams. It is made by Spectra Fine Jewelry
