Description
With architectural details as elegant as an Art Deco period skyscraper, these calibré emerald and diamond drop earrings made in the Contemporary Era, circa 2015, reflect the shimmering opulence, clean lines, and perfect proportions of the Machine Age. These urbane and luxurious drop earrings made for pierced ears are crafted mostly in 18K white gold and embellished with approximately 96 round brilliant-cut diamonds of an estimated 1.68 carats total. The upper dangles feature diamond- and milgrain-accented teardrop shapes that echo the sunburst pattern on the crown of the famous Chrysler Building. Milgrain, derived from the French mille-grain or a thousand grains, is most associated with the Art Deco period where it was used to complement the diamonds and deliver additional sparkle.
The true showstopper feature of these earrings; however, are the 14 calibré emeralds that weigh approximately 1.89 carats total, set within a contrasting geometric 18K yellow gold frame. For jewelry in the Art Deco style, geometric cuts like the calibré cut were paramount. Typically, rubies and other colored gemstones like emeralds were custom cut into rectangles, squares, oblongs, or other specialty shapes to specifically to fit very closely together in a jewelry design. Here, these precious green gemstones are tightly set against one another to create a more industrial feel and an innovative look, akin to the details on an automobile. These earrings, although made in the Contemporary Era, beautifully represent a sleek “new” urban landscape during a time that celebrated the extravagant development of the man-made environment.
