Contemporary Abstract Diamond Pave Cuff Bracelet in 18k White Gold

This elegant bangle bracelet has a design so abstract, it invites many interpretations as to what it represents. Sometimes it is enough to delight in the shapes and flourishes in and of themselves, and simply enjoy the effortless flow of lines, without asking the question, “to what effect?” The geometric abstraction provides a freedom from any representational qualities, even though we cannot help but identify a stylized X shape on the level of Louis XIV-type grandeur, or even a W, or a few scroll shapes that might be waves. It seems that the drive to decipher is a difficult habit to break.

The bangle pictured here is crafted in 18K white gold, but it is also offered in 18K yellow or rose gold for the same price. In each of the three iterations, the piece is embellished with round brilliant-cut diamonds weighing an estimated total of 2.31 carats. The diamonds are equivalent to G-I colors and VS-SI clarity. In white gold, the diamonds, doubled in two paved, curving rows, seem to float effortlessly along the curvilinear forms. In yellow or rose gold, the diamonds are more self-reflexive, calling attention to their sparkle. They add quite a flourish separate from the metal. It is pleasing to study such controlled variations within a motif to find the one that truly moves you.

From all angles, this modern style bangle, made in the 21st century, 2019, is seemingly more openwork than solid. If we trace the lines, we realize they curve round and round in a stylized infinity pattern. The only part that dramatically breaks the line is the open focal point of the motif at center front. Even though there is a gap at the back of the bracelet, the lines continue the flow, like a Bauhaus tube chair by Marcel Breuer. You would think the gap is there to make it possible to take the bracelet on and off, but in fact, there is a hinged hidden clasp that creates a wider opening for ease of wear. If abstraction is the process of taking away information, details, and context to boil things down to an essential idea, this bracelet achieves its formal purpose beautifully.
