Description
This fabulous vintage Cartier ring from the iconic Bamboo collection is crafted in 18K yellow gold set with diamonds and features a two-row design inspired by bamboo. The diamonds weigh an estimated total of 1.52 carats and are equivalent to F-G color and VS clarity. Behind the diamonds, there is azuring in the metal. Azuring is a technique where shaped cutouts are hand-carved behind each stone to allow light in and make the diamonds shine. Such an exquisite hand-wrought detail is emblematic of the Maison and takes a jeweler numerous hours of workmanship to achieve.
The ring, made in France in the Contemporary Era, circa 21st century, and signed Cartier, is a beautiful organic shape with naturalistic details. The design features the nodes on the bamboo culms—part of what give the plant its distinctive, segmented appearance—and sets them slightly off-center as a delicately-observed unusual focal point. Unusual also because the focal point in this particular example is not a gemstone, but the gold “negative space” unadorned with diamonds. It is rather breathtaking.
The Bamboo collection was introduced by the Maison in the 1990s, but is no longer produced today, thus increasing the value of a finite number of pieces extant. The bamboo rings were offered in one, two, and three row designs, simply in 18K gold, and also variously embellished with diamonds. According to Chinese traditions, three stalks of bamboo represent Fu (happiness), Lu (wealth), and Soh (long life). Two stalks, offered in this ring, represent love. And what could be more valuable and cherished than love?
