The Italian luxury jewelry house, founded in 1884 in Rome, posits, "Bulgari watches mark time with charisma," we could not agree more. It was during the 1940s that Bulgari introduced their first timepiece, the now iconic Bulgari Serpenti that coiled around the wrist like a snake. It was unique and extravagant, with modern, engineered coils of yellow gold. From its inception, the timepiece projected glamour and a wildly individual style and has been continually updated with new and more dazzling concepts over the last nearly 80 years. This Bulgari Quadrato Tubogas Vintage Ladies Timepiece Watch 22mm?, made in the 20th century, circa the 1990s, has the soul of the original, crafted in 18K yellow gold with a flexible and tubular litheness. The band unmistakably evokes the serpent's sensual curves and fluid shape within a luxurious yet minimalist presentation.

The Quadrato timepiece is monochromatic, featuring a bezel, case, crown, and bracelet in the same sunny yellow gold, a house signature. On the edge opposite the crown, the name BVLGARI is etched. The dial is the only part of the watch that is not gold. Perfectly square and black, the dial features gold hour and minute hand and hand-applied gold baton indexes. Unfortunately, Arabic numerals mark only 12 and 6. The timepiece is Signed by Bvlgari and numbered with Italian hallmarks for gold.

The original Bulgari Serpenti was portrayed as the seductive serpent from Greek mythology and made in the Tubogas style, or flexible tubular chain, which climbed the wrist like a sinewy snake and quickly garnered a cult following. The Tubogas was originally a corrugated tube made of articulated bands used to transport pressurized gas patented in 1881. Still, in the 1940s, it was discovered by jewelers, who gave it a glittering and sensational future. Its flexibility was sensual and sinuous, comprised of a series of gold-threaded grooves articulated by hinges concealing micro-springs.

Some styles in the Quadrato Tubogas collection are less tame than this version—unleashed to wrap around the wrist multiple times, coiling like a serpent. This more demure model comprises a bracelet that closes quite directly, the two ends coming together with a magnet. In the context of the Serpenti oeuvre, it is unsurprising that this innovative and unexpected closure once again leaves us breathless. The precision quartz movement is made in Switzerland.

Overall weight approx. 87.91 grams, made in 18k yellow gold. Signed Bvlari with serial number; circa the 1990s.
