Bulgari Naturalia Gold Fish Earrings

These charming Bulgari Naturalia Vintage Drop Earrings, crafted circa 1990s, feature a pleasingly bulbous geometric pattern that seems like it could go on forever, here depicting two pairs of abstractly figural kissing fish. Their lips are playfully locked, and their intense gaze sparkling, with eyes bezel-set with 4 round brilliant cut diamonds. The interlocking Naturalia motif at times resembles fish and, at times, resembles fish scales, depending on the design, and is amplified with colorful gems or pared down to the sculptural essence. The clip-back earrings are completed with hinged omega backs and are Signed Bvlgari, crafted in three golds—18K yellow, white, and rose.

The distinctive design aesthetic of the Italian luxury jewelry house, founded in Rome in 1884, was by the late 1970s strong, graphic, and highly stylized, and as ever with a feminine voluptuousness. The Bulgari style crystalized in the 1980s and continued to flourish in the 1990s, comprised of voluminous forms, signature sunny shades of yellow gold, and vibrantly colored gemstones composed in curvaceous patterns. The Naturalia collection was launched in 1991 as a celebration of Nature and continued the house’s embrace of modular jewelry, which began with the famed Parentesi collection in 1982. Bulgari set out to create ultimately wearable yet luxurious modular jewelry in which one strong motif is replicated in various materials, including minimalist gold or embellished with diamonds and multi-colored gems.

The open mouths of the fish are locked around an amusingly miniature version of their silhouette. As purely abstract shapes seen from afar, the earrings are elegant and quintessentially feminine pointed hourglass shapes composed of exquisitely balanced volumes. Here pared down to the sculptural essence, the design is focused on surface and color, with the smaller and larger fish boldly painted in different golds. The technique known as “marriage of metals” is a fusion process of two or more different types of metals at extremely high temperatures, and it was popularly used to highlight juxtaposed sculpted geometric links, used in a signature style from the Parentesi collection forward.
