Anyone who has seen Peter Pan knows it is sound advice to “never smile at a crocodile” because “he's imagining how well you'd fit within his skin,” but perhaps in this case, we can make an exception and “be taken in by his welcome grin.” This all-too-charming Asprey Vintage Yellow Diamond Figural Crocodile Brooch, made in the 20th century, circa 1990s, casts quite an imposing presence, yet we are drawn to his fascinating texture and sparkle, and cannot resist coming a little closer. Do we dare touch his skin? In this case, well yes, because his skin is crafted in 18K yellow gold set with white and yellow diamonds with an estimated weight of 67.41 carats total. You better believe we want to touch his skin. The double pinstem brooch is Signed Asprey and the overall weight is approximately 167.21 grams.
The piece is so sizeable and imposing, it is best worn as a shoulder brooch to support the weight comfortably. The piece depicts the amphibious reptile in a stealthy pose, his four legs and feet tucked under his body, stylized, and dotted with diamonds. His tail, which in nature is typically long and massive, curves to the side, and his skin is thick and plated, arranged in a regular pattern, here communicated in articulated textured gold segments adorned with 55 rectangular radiant-cut yellow diamonds with an estimated weight of 47.53 carats total. The diamonds are each held with 4 talon prongs at the cut-corners and are arranged in 1, 2, and 3 rows from the head to the body, tapering back down to 2 and 1 rows towards the end of the tail. The sparkle is a characteristic of the radiant cut, shaped with many facets and angles, making the sparkle appear almost like crushed ice. The colors of the yellow diamond are so well matched, another indication that this is a very fine piece of jewelry. White round brilliant-cut diamonds surround the yellow diamonds, and contour the outer edges throughout the length of the piece, with an estimated weight of 19.88 carats total. Adding extra dazzle to his piercing gaze, the crocodile’s eyes are set with two faceted green emeralds with an estimated weight of 1.08 carat.
Although figural animal jewels were popular in the 1980s, the luxurious treatment here is timeless, eye-catching, and bold. In fact pieces of such superlative quality today are rare and highly collectible. Founded in 1781, Asprey has been regarded as a top British luxury lifestyle brand for over two centuries. Their offerings include jewelry, leather, silver, and other luxury goods. Their master jewelers use only the finest and rarest precious stones, creating each Asprey piece by hand, onsite at the flagship store in the tony Mayfair area of London.
